Sibiu, called Hermannstadt by the Transylvanian Saxons who settled it in the twelfth century, is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Romania. The Large Square and the Small Square are joined by pastel townhouses, and many roofs have small attic windows that look like watching eyes. The Liars' Bridge, a small iron footbridge from 1859, stands near the Small Square, and the Brukenthal Museum, in a baroque palace, is the oldest museum in Romania. The Gothic Evangelical Cathedral has a tower with a view over the old town.
The ASTRA open-air museum in the Dumbrava forest shows rural houses and mills from across Romania. The Fagaras Mountains rise to the south, and the Transfagarasan road climbs over them in hairpin bends to a glacial lake. The fortified Saxon churches of Cisnădie, Cisnădioara and Biertan, with walls and towers that once sheltered whole communities, lie within reach.
Transylvanian cooking offers sarmale, cabbage rolls, grilled mici sausages, polenta, soups and papanasi, fried doughnuts with sour cream and jam, with Sibiu's winter salami a local pride. Plum brandy follows the meal. Winters bring snow to the surrounding hills, summers are warm, and autumn light is golden on the squares.
