Experience the best of Bucharest

Belle-époque boulevards, Orthodox churches and communist-era monuments meet around a busy old town in Bucharest, Romania's capital.

The vast Palace of the Parliament, among the largest administrative buildings in the world, dominates the centre as a striking legacy of the Ceaușescu era. Calea Victoriei, the grand avenue, leads past the domed Romanian Athenaeum concert hall, the former Royal Palace that houses the National Museum of Art, and Revolution Square, where the events of 1989 unfolded.

The old town around Lipscani street is packed with cafés, bars and churches such as the tiny, exquisite Stavropoleos Monastery. The open-air Village Museum, beside a large lakeside park, gathers traditional houses, windmills and wooden churches from across the country, and Cișmigiu Gardens offer a shady stroll. The city's own Arc de Triomphe and the Museum of the Romanian Peasant show pride in its heritage.

Beer halls and old taverns serve sarmale cabbage rolls, mici grilled sausages, polenta with cheese and sour cream, and papanași doughnuts. On the first of March, people exchange mărțișor, red-and-white tokens that welcome spring, and mild spring and autumn days suit sightseeing. Day trips lead to Peleș Castle in Sinaia, Bran Castle with its Dracula legend and the medieval town of Brașov in Transylvania.
