Capri rises from the sea off the Sorrentine peninsula, with two towns on its saddle: Capri itself, whose small square, the Piazzetta, is lined with cafés, and Anacapri, higher and quieter on the western side. The Roman emperor Augustus liked the island and Tiberius spent his last years here, and the ruins of his Villa Jovis stand on the eastern cliffs. Ferries and hydrofoils arrive at the Marina Grande.

The Gardens of Augustus look out over the three Faraglioni, rock stacks standing in the sea, and a zigzag path, the Via Krupp, descends to the shore below. In Anacapri, a chairlift rises to Monte Solaro, the island's high point, and the Villa San Michele has gardens made by the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe. Small rowing boats enter the Blue Grotto, a sea cave lit electric blue by sunlight through the water.

Insalata caprese, tomato, mozzarella and basil, and torta caprese, a flourless chocolate and almond cake, take their names from the island, and lemons grown here flavour liqueurs and granitas. Fresh fish and pasta with clams fill the terraced restaurants.
