Brescia stands in northern Lombardy, below the Alpine foothills, between Lake Garda and Lake Iseo. In the heart of the old town, the Roman Capitolium, a temple of the first century AD, and a Roman theatre stand near the Santa Giulia monastery, whose museum is part of a UNESCO listing for Longobard sites. Piazza della Loggia is lined with Renaissance arcades and has a clock tower with figures that strike the hours.
The medieval castle on Cidneo Hill looks over the red roofs and holds museums and gardens. The Rotonda, the old cathedral, is a round Romanesque church. The Mille Miglia road race began here in 1927 and has its own museum. The sparkling-wine vineyards of Franciacorta lie to the west, towards Lake Iseo, and the rock carvings of Val Camonica run up the valley beyond the lake.
Spiedo bresciano, mixed meats roasted slowly on a spit and served with polenta, is the city's signature, and casoncelli, stuffed pasta dressed with butter, sage and pancetta, is the classic first course. Franciacorta wine and olive oil from the shores of Lake Garda complete the table. Winter fog is common on the plain.
