Bari's old town, Bari Vecchia, is a tangle of white lanes and tiny squares on a peninsula pointing into the Adriatic, and many of its streets feel more like shared courtyards. The Basilica of San Nicola, begun in 1087 to house the relics of St Nicholas, draws both Catholic and Orthodox pilgrims, and the cathedral and the Swabian castle stand close by.
On Strada delle Orecchiette, women still shape orecchiette pasta by hand in the doorways, and the Lungomare promenade runs for kilometres beside the sea. Trulli houses with conical roofs stand in Alberobello about an hour inland, the white town of Polignano a Mare perches on sea cliffs to the south-east, and the octagonal Castel del Monte and the cave city of Matera are within reach.
Barese food is simple and strong: orecchiette with turnip tops, focaccia topped with tomatoes and olives, baked rice with potatoes and mussels, and raw seafood eaten on the quayside. Primitivo wine and olive oil come from the surrounding countryside. The feast of St Nicholas in May brings a sea procession, and the best weather runs from April to October.
