Experience the best of Arecibo

Arecibo sits on the Atlantic coast of northern Puerto Rico, at the mouth of the Río Grande de Arecibo, with a cathedral on its main plaza and a coastal park around the lighthouse. The Arecibo Lighthouse and Historical Park, with replicas of Columbus's ships and displays on the island's early history, occupies the point where the city meets the sea. Cueva del Indio, a cave on the cliffs shaped by the waves, holds old rock carvings.

In the limestone hills inland, the Arecibo Observatory's huge radio telescope was built into a natural sinkhole in 1963 and for decades was among the largest in the world, until it collapsed in 2020. The Río Camuy Cave Park, a large cave system, lies to the south-west, and the Río Abajo forest and Lake Dos Bocas are in the mountains to the south.

Fried snacks such as alcapurrias and bacalaítos, fresh fish and plates of plantain fill the north-coast kiosks and restaurants. The weather is warm all year, with the driest months generally from December to April.
