Fajardo lies at the north-eastern corner of Puerto Rico, where the mountains of El Yunque descend towards the Atlantic coast and the Caribbean begins. The town spreads from a working harbour and marina up into the hills, and nearby the Las Cabezas de San Juan nature reserve has a Spanish colonial lighthouse of 1882, dry forest, mangroves and a boardwalk to a headland over the sea.

Laguna Grande, a bioluminescent bay ringed by mangroves, glows blue in the dark when the water is disturbed, and kayaks glide through its channels. Offshore, the islands of Culebra and Vieques have some of the Caribbean's clearest water and wide beaches such as Flamenco, and small cays near Fajardo, such as Icacos, are popular for snorkelling. El Yunque, the island's rainforest, is a short drive west.

Fishing villages such as Las Croabas serve fried fish, lobster, mofongo, a mash of plantain and garlic, and alcapurrias, fritters of green banana and taro, from seaside kiosks. Rum and cold coconuts are never far away. The weather is warm all year, and December to April is the sunniest stretch.
