Itinerary
Your adventure begins with collection from your accommodation in Durban. Sit back and enjoy a scenic drive through the rolling hills and farmlands of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands as we make our way towards the Southern Drakensberg. Upon arrival in the picturesque village of Underberg, you'll transfer from your road vehicle into a specially equipped 4×4 vehicle, designed to tackle the rugged terrain of the legendary Sani Pass. Meet your guide, enjoy a brief tour introduction, and prepare for an unforgettable journey into one of Southern Africa's most spectacular mountain landscapes.
Departing Underberg, we travel through Himeville and enter the UNESCO-listed uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. Following the Mkomazana River through the scenic Sani Valley, you'll experience dramatic sandstone cliffs, mountain streams, rolling grasslands, and breathtaking views at every turn. As we ascend South Africa's highest mountain pass, your guide will share fascinating stories about the history, geology, wildlife, and people of the region. After completing formalities at the South African Border Post, we continue up the famous switchbacks towards the summit and the Lesotho border.
Having completed border formalities, we enter Lesotho, the "Kingdom in the Sky." Here, you'll visit a traditional Basotho village and gain insight into life in one of the world's highest inhabited regions. Learn about local customs, traditions, and daily life while meeting members of the community. Guests are invited to sample freshly baked Basotho bread and local beer, providing an authentic taste of mountain culture. This cultural experience offers a unique opportunity to connect with the people who have called these highlands home for generations.
After your cultural visit, we head to a mountain lodge for a well-deserved lunch. Perched high above the surrounding valleys, this unique mountain venue offers spectacular views across the Lesotho Highlands and the Drakensberg escarpment. Enjoy a hearty meal, relax with a cold beverage, and take in the incredible scenery while reflecting on the morning's adventure. The combination of dramatic landscapes, fresh mountain air, and warm hospitality makes this one of the most memorable stops of the day.
We begin our journey back down Sani Pass, experiencing the famous route from a completely different perspective. The descent provides fresh views of the towering cliffs, winding switchbacks, and vast valleys below, with opportunities for photographs along the way. Arriving back in Underberg at approximately 4:00 PM, we enjoy a complimentary coffee stop before beginning our return journey through the Midlands. Relax and reflect on a day filled with adventure, culture, and spectacular scenery as we return to Durban at approximately 6:00 PM.

5Excellent day out to Sani Pass
My partner and I booked the tour through TripAdvisor 3 days prior to departing and the process was seamless. We were informed that someone was able to pick us up in Umhlanga on the morning of departure and received Watsapp updates from Emile leading up to our departure. On the morning we were met by the wonderful Thabo in an absolutely spotless and spacious vehicle. Thabo was awesome to chat to and full of information about the local area - just a really nice guy and a born tour guide. He stopped for us to stretch our legs and get coffee and then transitioned us to Siya who is equally amazing and drove us up to Sani Pass on a spotless 4 wheel drive. We stopped halfway for coffee and to take photos and were even offered a complimentary Amarula (a very nice South African liqueur) on the way up. The drive up the pass is very steep but Siya was extremely adept at navigating it. Border crossing was extremely seamless and we enjoyed a visit to a traditional village and enjoyed lunch - we also saw snow and built some snowmen. Highly recommended day out and well worth the money we paid. Can’t fault Emile and his team (he even followed up personally the day after to obtain additional feedback (those sorts of personal touches and wanting to strife for always improving the customer experience are rare). By pass all the rest and just book with Roof of Africa tours. 100 out of 10!!!
5Sani Pass
Long day. But worth it. Beautiful scenery. Very knowledgeable guides. Adequate breaks. Comfortable transport
4The tour itself was fine....
The tour itself was fine. However, the weather was bad. The weather in Lesotho was so sudden that it could not be predicted, so it seemed inevitable. The fact that I could go from Durban to Lesotho on a day trip was a great advantage of this tour. I went comfortably because the tour company connected the vans. Despite the bad weather, the scenery was good. The first driver wandered for 30 minutes because he didn't know exactly where he had to drop me off in Himeville.
5Sani Pass
What an amazing and thrilling experience!!!! Absolutely breathtaking and exhilarating! Once in a life time trip to the “Kingdom in the Sky”. Our guides were not just awesome! 5 star experience!
5High up to the highest pup in Africa
Super nice experience to Sani Pass! Beautiful landscape and bumpy roar up the pass to the highest pup in Africa! The way to Underberg is a bit long, 3h in a comfortable mini bus and a friendly driver explaining so much about South Africa and local things. But then the road trip up the pass starts and it was a beautiful experience. The beauty is the small group (we were 4 in the Jeep) and hence stops upon our request was not a problem. Also there was a good communication with the experienced driver and other participants (if you want). Next time I will do it again! For sure!!
5Breathtaking Scenery - Excellent Day Tour from Durban!
This was a fantastic day tour from Durban - highly recommended. The scenery is beautiful and I felt very safe with our driver and guide - both of whom were a wealth of knowledge about Lesotho, KwaZulu-Natal, and South Africa in general Five stars all the way!
