Itinerary
Rotterdam Central Station is one of the city’s main modern landmarks. Reopened in 2014 after a major reconstruction, it reflects Rotterdam’s bold architectural identity and role as a major transport hub. Its sharp roofline, spacious hall, and connection with trains, trams, metro, and buses show the city’s forward-looking urban character.
Moments Contained is a monumental bronze sculpture by British artist Thomas J Price in front of Rotterdam Central Station. Installed in 2023, it shows a young woman standing calmly in everyday clothing. The work reflects contemporary ideas of public space, representation, dignity, and visibility in the modern city.
De Doelen Concert Hall is one of Rotterdam’s main cultural venues. Opened in 1966 on a site linked with an earlier pre-war concert hall, it became a symbol of the city’s post-war reconstruction. Its modern architecture, large halls, and strong musical programme reflect Rotterdam’s renewed cultural life after the devastation of World War II.
Schouwburgplein Square is one of Rotterdam’s most distinctive modern public spaces. Designed as an elevated urban stage, it is surrounded by theatres, cinemas, cafés, and cultural venues. Its open layout, movable lights, and industrial materials reflect Rotterdam’s experimental architecture and post-war reinvention.
Rotterdam City Hall is one of the few major central buildings that survived the bombing of 1940. Completed in 1920, it combines Beaux-Arts and Renaissance-inspired architecture with a monumental tower and richly decorated façade. The building reflects Rotterdam’s civic pride before the war and its continuity through destruction and reconstruction.
It’s Never Too Late to Say Sorry is a public artwork by the artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset in Rotterdam. The installation consists of a display case with a megaphone, linked to a daily ritual in which an apology is announced in public space. The work reflects themes of regret, responsibility, communication, and the emotional life of the modern city.
World Trade Center Rotterdam is a landmark business complex on Coolsingel. It combines the historic former stock exchange building with a modern tower added in the late 20th century. The complex reflects Rotterdam’s commercial identity, international connections, and ability to merge pre-war architecture with post-war urban renewal.
Saint Lawrence Church is the main medieval church of Rotterdam. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, it is one of the few surviving reminders of the city before the bombing of 1940. Its Gothic architecture, tower, stained glass, and reconstructed interior reflect Rotterdam’s medieval origins and post-war resilience.
Market Hall is one of Rotterdam’s most recognizable modern buildings. Opened in 2014, it combines a food market, shops, restaurants, apartments, and a vast arched interior covered with colourful artwork. Its bold form reflects Rotterdam’s experimental architecture and its reputation as a city of design, trade, and reinvention.
The Cube Houses, known locally in Dutch as Kubuswoningen, are among Rotterdam’s most famous examples of experimental architecture. Designed by Piet Blom in the 1970s and completed in the 1980s, the tilted yellow cubes represent an urban “forest” above street level. Their unusual geometry reflects Rotterdam’s playful approach to housing, design, and post-war reinvention.
The White House is one of Rotterdam’s most historic high-rise buildings. Completed in 1898 in Art Nouveau style, it was once among the tallest office buildings in Europe. Its white façade, decorative details, and survival of the 1940 bombing make it a powerful symbol of old Rotterdam and the city’s resilience.
Wijnhaven Canal is one of Rotterdam’s historic harbour canals. Once connected with trade, warehouses, and shipping activity, it reflects the city’s long relationship with the Maas River and maritime commerce. Today, the area combines old waterfront traces with modern architecture, showing Rotterdam’s shift from working port to contemporary urban district.

About Rotterdam
Rotterdam is a modern Dutch port city rebuilt after 1940, known for bold architecture, a huge harbour, the Cube Houses, a market hall and waterfront views.
Rotterdam was bombed in May 1940 and rebuilt in a modern style, so it is unlike the old canal towns of the Netherlands: glass towers, bridges and daring architecture line the Nieuwe Maas river, which is crossed by the white Erasmus Bridge. It has Europe's largest seaport, and the harbour can be toured by boat. Delfshaven, a small quarter of old canals that survived the bombs, is where the Pilgrim Fathers left in 1620.
Top-ranked sights in Rotterdam: Markthal (Market Hall) , Church of St. Lawrence (Sint Laurenskerk), Erasmusbrug (Erasmus Bridge).
