The city was central to the Boer Wars, witnessing sieges and peace treaty signings. In 1910, upon the formation of the Union of South Africa, it was designated the administrative capital. It officially became a city in 1931. Pretoria remained a key governmental hub throughout the apartheid era and continues this role in democratic South Africa, now part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. About Pretoria

Pretoria is South Africa's administrative capital in Gauteng, known for jacaranda-lined streets, the Union Buildings and sites of the nation's history.

Pretoria sits in a valley between ridges of the highveld, about an hour's drive north of Johannesburg. The Union Buildings, a sweeping sandstone complex on a hill with formal gardens, is the seat of the presidency and the site of Nelson Mandela's 1994 inauguration. Church Square, with its statue of Paul Kruger, is the historic heart, and the Voortrekker Monument stands on a hilltop, a granite landmark with a museum inside.

Top-ranked sights in Pretoria: Voortrekker Monument, Union Buildings, Kruger Museum.
