Highlights

Kubah National Park is an easy and enjoyable day trip from Kuching. Situated on a small sandstone plateau, this small park boasts crystal clear streams and a host of small waterfalls and bathing pools. Kubah is mostly covered by mixed dipterocarp forest, but it also has one of the widest selections of palms and orchids in Borneo. The varied wildlife includes bearded pig, mouse deer, black hornbill and many species of amphibians and reptiles. However, Kubah’s wildlife tends to stay deep in the forest so it is not really a park for “wildlife encounters”. The appeal of Kubah National Park lies in its rainforest scenery, its waterfalls, streams and bathing pools and the 93 species of palm found within its boundaries.

Itinerary

  1. 1750-1810 hours pick up from your hotel, you will be meeting our friendly driver at your hotel lobby and proceed for the tour. After arriving at Kubah National Park HQ, start walking up the Summit Road towards the frog pond. Along the way, be on the watch for frogs along the side of the road as well as nocturnal wildlife in the forest. The tiny Matang narrow mouth frog can sometimes be spotted at the side of the road amongst the pitcher plants. The frogs deposit their eggs on the sides of the pitcher and the tadpoles live in the pitcher plant until they emerge as young frogs. Adult males are only 10.6-12.8 mm in size so vigilance is required. At the frog pond, search for frogs and listen to wonderful frog sounds. In 2014 Australian sound recordist Marc Anderson recorded the frogs at Kubah National Park and won the “Most Beautiful Sound in the World” competition. Enjoy similar sounds as ‘’Dusk by the Frog Pond‘. Stand in the middle of Borneo rainforest and listen to a living orchestra of wildlife. After your frogging experience, walk back to the park HQ and depart Kubah around 2200-2300 hours returning to Kuching and your hotel.

About Kuching

Kuching, capital of Sarawak on Borneo, is a river city of colonial buildings, Chinese temples and nearby rainforest with orangutans.

Kuching stretches along the Sarawak River in the north-west of Borneo, with a waterfront promenade between old colonial buildings. The Brooke family, the White Rajahs, ruled Sarawak from here for a century, and their legacy survives in Fort Margherita, the Astana across the river and the Old Courthouse. The shophouses of the old Chinese quarter and the Tua Pek Kong temple show the other side of the city's heritage.

Top-ranked sights in Kuching: Kubah National Park, Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, Bako National Park.
