Itinerary
Horseback riding around the Arenal Volcano takes you through lush tropical rainforests, rustic cattle pastures, and scenic river crossings, leading to elevated viewpoints with dramatic vistas of the iconic volcanic cone and old lava fields. Suitable for riders of all skill levels, the gentle pace on well-trained horses allows you to easily spot local wildlife like howler monkeys, sloths, and colorful toucans in the canopy while enjoying an immersive nature tour led by knowledgeable local guides.
On your way up, you’ll stop at a beautiful lagoon where the horses will refresh themselves and you’ll be given time to stretch and look around. Continuing on, you’ll come to a lookout with marvelous views of the Arenal Volcano. Have your camera ready, because you’re going to want it! This trail mainly covers private property, and was initially used by Don Tobias, a well-known horse breeder in the Arenal area. The Don Tobias stables take good care of their horses and work hard to ensure that their guests have a memorable experience. We recommend bringing long pants, a t-shirt, binoculars, camera, sunscreen, and insect repellent along for this tour.
