Highlights
Meet your naturalist guide in Catania and travel to the north side of Mount Etna. Once you reach Piano Provenzana (the less touristy side), board a special 4x4 vehicle for the ascent to the summit area (2950 meters). From there, enjoy a moderate hike accompanied by your naturalist guide and a licensed volcanological guide, who is required for excursions at this altitude. Please note that the 4x4 ascent fee (€70 per person) is not included in the tour price and must be paid directly to your guide on the day of the tour. Continue your experience by exploring one of Mount Etna's fascinating volcanic caves. Helmets and headlamps will be provided. At lunchtime, relax at a local winery on the slopes of Mount Etna and enjoy a light lunch featuring traditional Sicilian specialties, accompanied by a tasting of two Etna DOC wines. Winter itinerary (January–March): due to the snow, the access to the area may require a snowcat (30€ per person extra).

Itinerary
Spend the day discovering one of the world’s most beautiful and active Volcanoes during this small-group trip to Mt. Etna. Depart in the morning from Catania and head to Rifugio Sapienza at Etna’s base. Travel by cable car and off-road vehicle up to the volcano’s craters, and go for a hike at 3000 meters! Visit a cave of volcanic origins with the equipment provided by us (helmets and torches).

5Don’t Miss The Climb of Your Life
This excursion was one of the most memorable of my life. At the age of 74, I was able to walk across ancient lava paths and see old eruption sites. Our tour guide was excellent, friendly and knowledgeable about the history of Etna and the surrounding communities. He was glad to answer any questions and was respectful. Anyone traveling in Sicily should make this trip during their stay. Congratulations to Viator and to those responsible for choosing our much appreciated guide.
5Don’t miss this
What a fabulous day out with Francesco as our guide and Vincenzo as our Vulcanologist. The weather was kind. No wind at the top and the cloud lifted just after we got there giving us perfect views of Etna. Light lunch was literally 3 courses and delicious. Lava cave interesting. Cannot recommend this highly enough.
1Mount Etna great this provider less so
My Etna is phenomenal a true once in a lifetime experience. That said do not go with this company is there a plethora of alternative options. At the last minute our southside trip including the cable car was canceled for a northside 4 x 4 trip. The van provided had nonworking seatbelts and drove at a harrowing 150 km/h. We were then charged the price in cash for the cable car despite the 4 x 4 experience costing less. Do not use this provider as there are many other options available.

Marco was great. Knowledgeable and safe. Had a great day exploring Etna and surrounding areas. Lunch was fulfilling. Views were amazing from Etna
5Excellent way to experience Etna
We have had an excellent tour with Danilo. He was such a knowledgeable and attentive guide, also funny and speaks perfect English. We have learned a lot and, despite the weather (full of snow on the volcano and expected to snow, but it eventually did not). The set-up is excellent, you get some warm jackets and proper boots in case you did not bring your own. The switch between various modes of transport keeps the effort in balance, but you get to actually trek a bit outdoors; the balance was perfect for a snowy season. Maybe during milder weather, you would like to trek more. The views are stunning anyway. For lunch, do not expect a full-fledged one, it's street food from Catania (pizzete, other savory pastry), and a bottle of wine for the group to share. It was anyway, enough to refuel for the last part of the tour. There was a small misunderstanding at the end when we had to pay, but it was eventually sorted out, and we paid as per the advertisement.

About Catania
Catania, on Sicily's east coast, is a black lava-stone city beneath Mount Etna, with a noisy fish market, Baroque squares and a long seafront.
Catania lies at the foot of Mount Etna, the active volcano whose lava reached the city in 1669, and an earthquake in 1693 flattened it. Rebuilt in the eighteenth century in the Baroque style, it uses black lava stone for walls and paving, set against white limestone. The Piazza del Duomo has an elephant of lava stone carrying an obelisk, the cathedral of Sant'Agata, and a fountain.
