About Alajuela
Alajuela is a warm Central Valley city in Costa Rica, with a leafy main square, coffee farms and Poás Volcano on its northern horizon.
Alajuela is a provincial capital in Costa Rica's Central Valley, about twenty kilometres north-west of San José, and the home of the country's main international airport. Its central park is shaded by mango trees, which give the city its nickname, and a cathedral with a rounded dome stands beside it. A statue and museum honour Juan Santamaría, the young drummer boy who became a national hero in the 1856 war against William Walker and was born here.
