Viti Levu is the largest of Fiji's islands and home to most of its people. Nadi, in the drier west, has the international airport, while Suva, the capital and biggest city, sits on the wetter south-east coast with a harbour, a busy market and colonial-era buildings. Between them the Queens Road follows the Coral Coast, a stretch of fringing reef, beach resorts and small villages.
Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park holds shifting dunes and ancient pottery sites, and Pacific Harbour, near Beqa Lagoon, is known for diving with sharks. Inland, Navala village keeps its thatched bure houses in a highland valley, Colo-i-Suva Forest Park has rainforest pools close to Suva, and Mount Tomanivi, also called Mount Victoria, is the highest peak on Fiji at 1,324 metres.
Feasts are cooked in a lovo, an earth oven lined with hot stones, and kava, a mildly numbing drink made from a root, is shared in a circle. The dry season runs from May to October, though the south-east is wet in any month. The Indo-Fijian community adds roti, curries and sweets, and Suva's municipal market sells kava, fruit and fish.
