Nadi lies on the dry west side of Viti Levu, where the main international airport stands, and it is the starting point for most trips to the island resorts. Its Indo-Fijian community, descended from workers brought to cut sugar cane from the late 19th century, gives the town its character. The Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple, painted in bright colours and carved with many deities, is said to be the largest Hindu temple in the southern hemisphere.

The Garden of the Sleeping Giant, north of town, holds a large orchid collection, and the Sabeto Valley has hot springs and mud pools. Day boats run from Port Denarau to the Mamanuca islands, with their white sand and coral, and farther north the Yasawa group has remote beaches. Inland, the hills are planted with sugar cane and covered in forest.

Fijian food centres on fish, root crops and coconut. Kokoda is raw fish marinated in coconut milk and lime, lovo is a feast cooked in an earth oven, and Indo-Fijian curries and roti are found everywhere. Kava, a mildly numbing drink pounded from a root, opens ceremonies. The dry season, from May to October, has the clearest skies.
