Denarau Island is a low, flat island beside Fiji's west coast, a few kilometres from Nadi and reached by a short road. It is a planned resort district, with hotels, villas, a golf course, shops and restaurants laid out around lawns, lagoons and a marina. Port Denarau, at its edge, is the main harbour for island-bound boats.

Most ferries and day cruises to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands leave from Port Denarau, and those white beaches and reef-fringed lagoons lie from one to several hours offshore. On the mainland, Nadi has the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple, a large and brightly painted Hindu temple, while the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, an orchid garden, and the Sabeto mud pools and hot springs sit in the hills behind the town.

Restaurants around the marina serve grilled fish, prawns in coconut sauce and Indian-Fijian curries, and kokoda, raw fish soaked in lime juice and coconut milk, appears on most menus. Sunsets over the water are the evening ritual, and the drier months run from May to October.
