Experience the best of Tunis
Tunis is the capital of Tunisia, a Mediterranean city of a walled medina, Roman mosaics, ancient Carthage and the blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Said.

Tunis grew around its medina, a World Heritage maze of vaulted lanes, mosques, palaces and souks that spreads from the Zitouna Mosque. The souks specialise: perfumes, gold, leather and the red felt caps called chechia each have their own alleys. The medina is entered through Bab el Bhar, the French Gate, from the broad Avenue Habib Bourguiba, which has French colonial buildings and cafés and runs to the cathedral of St Vincent de Paul.
The Bardo National Museum, in a former Ottoman palace, has one of the finest collections of Roman mosaics anywhere. Carthage, about 15 kilometres to the north-east, preserves the Antonine Baths, the Punic ports and the Byrsa hill, and Sidi Bou Said, a cliffside village of white walls and blue doors, looks over the Gulf of Tunis. Roman Dougga, a hilltop town in the countryside, lies about 100 kilometres west.
Brik, a thin pastry parcel fried with an egg inside, lablabi, a chickpea soup, fricassé sandwiches and couscous are favourite dishes, and harissa chilli paste goes on almost everything. Mint tea with pine nuts is served in cafés. The sea is warm enough for swimming from June to October.
