Douz lies at the northern edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, the great sand sea of the Sahara, in southern Tunisia, and is surrounded by palm groves that stretch to the first dunes. The Mrazig people, a Bedouin community, settled here, and the town still holds a weekly market where nomads and farmers sell dates, livestock and crafts.
Camel rides from the edge of the town cross the dunes, and four-wheel-drive tracks lead into the deeper desert. The Chott el Djerid, an enormous salt lake to the north-west, is crossed by a causeway, Ksar Ghilane, an oasis with a spring and a Roman fort, lies to the south-east, and the underground houses of Matmata lie to the east. Tozeur and Nefta, two more palm oases, lie beyond the salt lake.
Deglet nour dates, the pride of the Tunisian oases, come from the groves, and couscous with lamb, brik pastries and bread baked in sand or a clay oven are the staples, followed by mint tea with pine nuts. Summers are extremely hot, winter days are warm and the nights cold, and the best weather runs from October to April.
