Djerba lies off the south-east coast of Tunisia, linked to the mainland by a Roman causeway and by a short ferry crossing. The island is flat and sunny, with palm and olive groves, whitewashed houses with domed roofs and fortress-like mosques. Houmt Souk, the main town, has a lively souk and a harbour with a sea fort, the Borj el Kebir, and the village of Guellala is known for its pottery.

The island has long been a meeting place of cultures, and the El Ghriba synagogue, with its blue tilework, is one of the oldest in Africa. Tradition identifies Djerba with the land of the Lotus-Eaters in Homer's Odyssey. Sandy beaches line the north-east coast, and flamingos gather in the shallows near Ras Tourgueness. On the mainland, Roman ruins, hillside villages and the cave homes of Matmata are a day trip away.

Seafood is the star: grilled fish, octopus, and couscous with fish, along with brik, a fried pastry with an egg inside, and harissa, a hot chilli paste. Dates and figs fill the markets, and mint tea comes in small glasses. Summers are hot and dry, spring and autumn are mild, and the sea is warm from May to October.
