Sousse's medina, a World Heritage Site, is a walled maze of lanes, shops and old houses rising from the harbour. The ribat, a fortress-monastery of the eighth century, has a watchtower with views over the roofs and the sea, and the Great Mosque, dating from the ninth century, is a plain stone building around a courtyard. Phoenicians founded a port called Hadrumetum here, which later flourished under Rome.

The archaeological museum in the kasbah has one of the finest collections of Roman mosaics in the Mediterranean, and underground catacombs hold early Christian burials. Port El Kantaoui, to the north, is a marina resort, and the Roman amphitheatre of El Jem, one of the largest in the Roman world, lies about sixty kilometres to the south. Monastir, with its coastal ribat, and the holy city of Kairouan are also within reach.

Seafood and olive oil sustain Tunisian cooking here: grilled fish, couscous, brik with egg or tuna, and spicy harissa on the side. Pastries of honey and nuts, such as baklawa, fill the shop windows of the medina, and the olive groves of the Sahel stretch inland. Summers are hot, and the sea is warm from June to October.
