Experience the best of Tipperary

Tipperary is a county of rich farmland, with the Golden Vale, a fertile lowland of green fields and hedges, running through its middle. The market town of Tipperary serves the farms around it, and the name is best known abroad through the First World War marching song, It's a Long Way to Tipperary.

The Rock of Cashel, a limestone outcrop crowned by a medieval cathedral, round tower and high cross, stands in the town of Cashel, and Cahir Castle, a large medieval fortress on an island in the River Suir, lies to the south. The Galtee Mountains rise in the south of the county, with the Glen of Aherlow below them, and Slievenamon, a rounded peak, is climbed by walkers. Lough Derg, a wide lake on the Shannon, lies along the county's north-western edge.

Irish food here is dairy, beef and lamb, with the Golden Vale's butter, cheese and farmhouse bread, and the pub meals are generous. The county is green and mild, with frequent rain. Spring and summer are the most pleasant months, and the long light of June suits walking in the hills.
