Experience the best of Waterford

Waterford, founded by Vikings in 914, is among Ireland's oldest cities, a quayside town on the River Suir with medieval towers and a famous bread roll.

The Viking Triangle, a cluster of medieval streets by the quays, preserves the city's early core. Reginald's Tower, a round stone tower on the quay, stands on a Viking site and now holds a museum, and the Medieval Museum shows treasures found beneath the streets. The city has been known since the eighteenth century for hand-cut crystal.

The Waterford Greenway, a 46-kilometre cycling and walking route on an old railway line, runs west through viaducts and tunnels to Dungarvan. The Copper Coast, a UNESCO-listed geopark of sea cliffs and coves, lies between Tramore and Dungarvan, the Comeragh Mountains hold lakes carved by ice, and across the estuary on the Hook Peninsula stands Hook Lighthouse, one of the oldest working lighthouses in the world.

The blaa, a soft white roll dusted with flour, has protected status and is eaten filled with bacon or ham, and the fishing harbour at Dunmore East supplies fresh seafood. Mild, wet Atlantic weather means rain can fall in any month, and the sunny south-east is at its best in early summer.
