Cobh stands on Great Island in Cork Harbour, a broad natural harbour, with terraced houses in many colours climbing the hill from the waterfront. St Colman's Cathedral, a Gothic Revival church with a carillon of forty-nine bells, towers over the town. Cork city lies a short rail journey to the north-west.
Millions of Irish emigrants sailed from Cobh, then called Queenstown, and it was the Titanic's last port of call in April 1912. Survivors of the Lusitania, sunk off the Cork coast in 1915, were brought ashore here, and a heritage centre tells the story of the emigrants. Spike Island, a former fortress and prison, can be reached by boat, and Fota Wildlife Park and Fota House lie on the neighbouring island.
Seafood chowder, fresh fish, Irish brown bread and Cork's spiced beef are on local menus, and pubs along the waterfront have live music. The weather is mild and changeable, with soft Atlantic rain at any time of year and bright spells in summer.
