Sofia sits in a high basin at the foot of Mount Vitosha, and its centre layers Roman Serdica, Orthodox Bulgaria and the Ottoman and Soviet eras. The gold-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, completed in the early twentieth century, is the city's best-known building. Close by are the fourth-century rotunda of St George, the Banya Bashi Mosque and the remains of Roman streets that show through glass in the metro stations.

The medieval Boyana Church on the city's edge is famous for frescoes painted in 1259, and the Rila Monastery, Bulgaria's best-known religious site, lies about two hours south in the mountains. Vitosha, whose highest point is Cherni Vrah, offers walking and skiing on the city's doorstep, and hot mineral water still flows from a public fountain in the centre. Plovdiv, ancient and hilly, is a day trip away.

Bulgarian meals start with shopska salad of tomato, cucumber and white sheep's cheese, then banitsa, a flaky pastry filled with cheese, and grilled meats such as kebapche. Yoghurt is a source of pride, and rakia, a fruit brandy, is poured as an aperitif. Spring and early autumn are mild; summers are warm and winters cold and snowy, when the nearby slopes fill with skiers.
