Varna lies on a wide bay and has been a harbour since Greek settlers founded Odessos here in the sixth century BC. The Archaeological Museum holds the treasure from a prehistoric cemetery found nearby, some of the oldest worked gold ever recovered, and the Roman Thermae, a large bath complex of the second and third centuries, stand in the old town. The domed Cathedral of the Assumption stands in the city centre, and the Sea Garden stretches for kilometres along the cliffs above the beach.
Outside the city, the cave monastery of Aladzha is cut into a limestone cliff in woodland north of town, and the Pobiti Kamani, or Stone Forest, is a field of weathered rock columns in sandy ground to the west. The resorts of Golden Sands and Albena lie further up the coast, and Nessebar, an ancient peninsula town with Byzantine churches, is a long day trip to the south.
The coast's cooking centres on fish: grilled bonito and turbot, fried sprats and Black Sea mussels, served with shopska salad, tarator, a cold soup of cucumber and yoghurt, and a glass of rakia on the side. The beaches fill in July and August, while May, June and September bring pleasant warmth.
