Experience the best of Plovdiv
Plovdiv, in southern Bulgaria, is a city of hills, Roman ruins and a Revival-era old town, long settled on the plain of the Maritsa River.

Plovdiv rises around several rocky hills above the Maritsa plain, and people have lived here since prehistory. The Roman theatre of Philippopolis, dug out of a hillside and still used for concerts, and the remains of the Roman stadium under the main pedestrian street are the best-known relics. Above them the cobbled old town is lined with nineteenth-century merchants' houses with colourful, overhanging upper storeys.
The Dzhumaya Mosque, the Ethnographic Museum in the Kuyumdzhioglu House and the hilltop of Nebet Tepe add to the old town, while the Kapana district below is full of small studios, galleries and cafés. Bachkovo Monastery, founded in the eleventh century, lies in the Rhodope Mountains to the south, and Asen's Fortress stands on a cliff above Asenovgrad.
Bulgarian cooking is simple and generous: shopska salad with white cheese, grilled kebapche, banitsa pastry and a glass of rakia. The Thracian plain grows grapes for wines such as Mavrud, a dark red local to the area. Summers are hot, winters cold, and spring and early autumn are mild.
