Paphos is a harbour town on Cyprus's south-west coast, with Roman mosaics, ancient tombs, a seafront fort and the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite nearby.

Paphos is split between the harbourside Kato Paphos, where most of the ancient sites lie, and the hillside town of Ktima above it. Kato Paphos is a World Heritage site, with the floor mosaics of Roman villas such as the House of Dionysos, the ruins of an odeon and a small fort at the harbour mouth. Nearby, the Tombs of the Kings are rock-cut burial chambers dating from the 4th century BC.
According to myth, Aphrodite rose from the sea at Petra tou Romiou, a sea stack and pebble cove on the coast east of town. To the north-west, the Akamas Peninsula has rugged shoreline, walking trails and the Baths of Aphrodite, a shaded pool. Inland, the Troodos Mountains rise to pine forest, painted Byzantine churches and villages that make wine and honey.
Meze, a long procession of small dishes, is the local way to eat, with grilled halloumi, souvlaki and lamb baked slowly in clay ovens. Commandaria, a sweet dessert wine from the Troodos foothills, and zivania, a clear grape spirit, are the local drinks. Winters are mild and green, and the hills flower in spring.
