Protaras is a quieter neighbour of Ayia Napa on the east coast of Cyprus, known for sheltered Fig Tree Bay and a shore of small rocky coves.

Protaras grew up along the east coast of Cyprus, in the Famagusta District, a few kilometres north of Ayia Napa and within the municipality of Paralimni. Its main strip runs behind Fig Tree Bay, a curve of soft sand with shallow, clear water and a promenade of cafés. Pernera lies to the north, and Konnos Bay, a small cove between pine-covered cliffs, to the south.

Cape Greco, with its sea caves and coastal trails, is just beyond Konnos Bay. Profitis Ilias, a small chapel on a hill above the resort, looks down over the bays. Inland, Paralimni and the farming villages of the district are known for their potatoes and red soil, and the sea off the coast is good for snorkelling and diving.

Fish tavernas along the seafront serve sea bream and grilled octopus, and kleftiko, lamb baked slowly in a clay oven, is a Cypriot favourite. The sea holds its warmth well into autumn, and the swimming season runs from May to October. Halloumi grilled over charcoal turns up in most tavernas.
