Limassol sits on the south coast of Cyprus, a port city with a modern waterfront of towers and marinas beside an old town of narrow lanes. The medieval castle near the old harbour is traditionally linked with the wedding of Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria of Navarre in 1191. The Molos promenade runs for kilometres along the shore through gardens, and the central market sells fruit, fish and spices.
West of the city, the Crusader keep of Kolossi Castle and the Greco-Roman theatre of ancient Kourion, set on a cliff above the sea, are the best-known ruins. The Troodos Mountains rise to the north, with wine villages such as Omodos, while Commandaria, a sweet dessert wine, is made in villages on the southern slopes. Flamingos winter on the Akrotiri salt lake.
Meze, a long procession of small dishes of halloumi, grilled meats, olives and dips, is the Cypriot way to eat, and zivania, a strong grape spirit, is the local drink. Summers are hot and dry and the sea stays warm into November. A carnival parade fills the streets in late winter before Lent, and fresh fish is served along the seafront all year.
