Ayia Napa lies on the south-east corner of Cyprus, in the Famagusta District, where a run of sandy bays meets the open Mediterranean. In the old centre, a monastery from the Venetian period stands in a quiet courtyard shaded by an ancient sycamore fig. Beyond it, the harbour is a small fishing port with restaurants, while the town's strip of bars and clubs stretches inland.
Nissi Beach, with fine white sand and a small islet that can be reached by wading, and Makronissos are the best-known bays. Cape Greco, a protected headland with cliffs, sea caves and walking and cycling trails, lies to the east. The Thalassa museum, devoted to the sea, and an open-air sculpture park show another side of the town.
Cypriot grills and tavernas serve halloumi, souvlaki in warm pitta bread, and fresh sea bream. The swimming season is long, from May to October, and winters are mild and mostly sunny. Loukoumades, honey-soaked dough balls, are the dessert to order.
