Larnaca grew on the site of ancient Kition, birthplace of the philosopher Zeno, founder of Stoicism, and its seafront promenade, Finikoudes, is lined with palms, cafés and a town beach. The Church of Saint Lazarus, with a carved and gilded iconostasis, stands over a tomb that tradition says holds the friend of Jesus raised from the dead. A medieval fort at the end of the promenade holds a small museum.
Just outside town, the Salt Lake fills with water in winter and with flamingos from about November to March, and beside it stands Hala Sultan Tekke, a mosque set among palms, an important Muslim shrine. The Kamares Aqueduct, with its rows of stone arches, was built by the Ottomans in the eighteenth century. Hill villages such as Lefkara, known for lace and silverwork, and Stavrovouni monastery on its conical hilltop lie inland, and the wreck of the ferry Zenobia is a famous dive.
The table is the Cypriot meze, a long run of small dishes: halloumi, grilled meats, olives, tahini and fresh salads, followed by sweet pastries and Cypriot coffee. Commandaria, a dark dessert wine, has been made on the island for centuries. The sea stays warm into late autumn.
