Ohakune lies on the southern edge of Tongariro National Park, a dual World Heritage area of volcanoes that is sacred to Māori. Above the town rises Mount Ruapehu, an active volcano and the highest peak on the North Island at 2,797 metres. Volcanic soil around the town grows root vegetables, and a giant carrot at the edge of the main road celebrates the fact.
A mountain road climbs from the town to the Turoa ski area on Ruapehu, and in summer it gives access to walks and views over the plateau. The Old Coach Road, a historic trail for walkers and cyclists, crosses a restored railway viaduct in the bush. From nearby Raetihi, a winding road leads down to the Whanganui River, and Lake Taupō lies to the north-east.
Hearty café food, hot chocolate and soup suit the mountain air, and the town's small centre fills with skiers once snow settles on the upper slopes between June and October. The rest of the year the walkers take over, and the volcanoes stand out against the clearest skies on a still morning.
