About Johor Bahru
Johor Bahru, at the southern tip of peninsular Malaysia, faces Singapore across a narrow strait, with a Moorish-style mosque, a palace and night markets.
Johor Bahru is the capital of Johor, on the Johor Strait opposite Singapore, to which it is joined by a causeway, with a second crossing farther west. The city grew in the 19th century under Sultan Abu Bakar, whose Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque, in a mix of Moorish and Victorian styles, looks over the strait from a hill. The Istana Besar, the sultan's palace, stands close by and includes a museum.
