Experience the best of Bruges
Bruges is a medieval Flemish city of canals, cobbled squares and brick gables, its historic centre protected as a World Heritage site.

Bruges grew rich in the Middle Ages on the cloth trade and as a port joined to the sea by a channel, until the waterway silted up and left the city almost untouched for centuries. The Markt square is overlooked by the Belfry, whose 366 steps lead up to a carillon and a view across the rooftops. A short walk away, the Burg holds the Gothic city hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood.
Canals loop around the old centre under humpbacked bridges, with swans on the water, and boat trips pass the Rozenhoedkaai, a favourite spot for photographers. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk holds a marble Madonna and Child by Michelangelo, the Groeninge Museum shows Flemish painting, and Memling's work hangs in the old St John's Hospital. The North Sea coast is about fifteen kilometres away.
Frites with mayonnaise, waffles, mussels and pralines are sold in every street, and the city has shops devoted to chocolate and to bobbin lace. Flemish beef stew cooked in beer suits the damp days, and Belgian beers run from pale blonde ales to dark abbey brews. Christmas markets light the squares in winter.
