Experience the best of Ghent
Ghent, in Flanders, is a medieval city of canals, a castle and Gothic churches, home to a large university and a busy cultural life.

Ghent grew rich on the cloth trade at the meeting of the Scheldt and Leie rivers, and its old centre still shows it. The Graslei and Korenlei quays are lined with guild houses, and the Gravensteen, a twelfth-century castle of the counts of Flanders, rises from the water. Three towers dominate the skyline: the Belfry, St Nicholas' Church and St Bavo's Cathedral.
St Bavo's holds the Ghent Altarpiece, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, painted by the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck in the fifteenth century. The Patershol quarter's cobbled lanes hold small restaurants, and the Museum of Fine Arts and the contemporary art museum stand close together by the Citadel Park. Boat trips run along the canals, and Bruges and Brussels are each under an hour away by train.
Waterzooi, a creamy stew of chicken or fish, is the city's dish, and cuberdons, small cone-shaped raspberry-flavoured sweets, are sold across the old centre. Belgian beer is served in cafés of every age. The Gentse Feesten, ten days of street music and theatre in July, is the busiest time, though spring and autumn are calmer.
