Liège spreads along the Meuse where the Ourthe joins it, in the French-speaking east of Belgium. For centuries it was ruled by prince-bishops, and their palace still stands beside Place Saint-Lambert. The Montagne de Bueren, a staircase of 374 steps, climbs steeply from the old centre towards the citadel. The Grand Curtius, a museum of glass, weapons, art and archaeology, fills a seventeenth-century mansion on the river.
Guillemins station, designed by Santiago Calatrava, is a sweep of white steel and glass arches. The church of Saint-Barthélemy holds a twelfth-century bronze baptismal font by Renier de Huy, a masterpiece of medieval metalwork from the Meuse valley. The town of Spa, which gave every spa its name, lies in the hills to the south-east, and Maastricht and Aachen are a short journey across the border.
The Liège waffle, dense and sweet with chunks of pearl sugar that caramelise on the iron, is sold hot from street stalls. Boulets à la liégeoise are meatballs in a sweet-sour sauce, served with chips, and peket is the local juniper spirit, a Walloon genever. On Sundays the La Batte market stretches along the quay. Spring to early autumn suits the riverside.
