Experience the best of Antwerp
Antwerp is a Flemish port city on the Scheldt, known for its Gothic cathedral, Rubens, a grand railway station and the diamond trade.

The tall spire of the Gothic cathedral rises above the old centre, and inside hang paintings by Rubens, who lived in the city and whose house and studio are now a museum. The Grote Markt is ringed by gabled guild houses and has a fountain showing the hero Brabo hurling a giant's severed hand into the river, a story linked with the city's name. The railway station, finished in 1905, is nicknamed the railway cathedral.
Antwerp is among Europe's busiest ports, and the Scheldt waterfront has the medieval castle called Het Steen and the MAS museum, whose red stone tower has a rooftop terrace. The Plantin-Moretus Museum preserves a Renaissance printing house, the diamond district lies beside the station, and the fashion scene, which grew from the Antwerp Six designers of the 1980s, fills the streets around Nationalestraat. Mechelen, Ghent and Brussels are all easily reached.
Frites with mayonnaise, stoofvlees, a beef stew cooked in beer, and mussels are the city's everyday food. The local beer, De Koninck, comes in a small round glass called a bolleke, and Antwerp has its own hand-shaped biscuits, the Antwerpse handjes. Terraces fill along the river in summer, and the old streets suit walking in spring and early autumn.
