Experience the best of Brussels

Brussels, Belgium's capital and a seat of European institutions, pairs a gilded Grand-Place with comic-strip murals, Art Nouveau houses and waffle stalls.

The Grand-Place is the centre of old Brussels, a cobbled square ringed by gilded guildhalls and the Gothic town hall, whose spire rises over everything. A few streets away, the small bronze Manneken Pis draws a crowd. On the hill above, the Royal Palace and the Mont des Arts gardens look down on the lower town, while the Atomium, a giant model of an iron crystal built for the 1958 World Fair, stands on the northern edge.

Victor Horta's Art Nouveau townhouses, with their curving ironwork and glass, are part of the city's UNESCO listings, and the Magritte Museum and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts hold major collections. Belgium's love of comics shows in murals on building walls and in a museum devoted to the form, since Tintin's creator Hergé was Belgian. Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp are each within about an hour by train, and the Waterloo battlefield lies just south.

Classic Brussels fare is moules-frites, crisp fries with mayonnaise, beef stewed in beer, waffles and pralines from the chocolate shops. Belgian beers fill the old cafés, including the sour lambic brewed in and around Brussels. The weather is mild and often damp, and late spring through early autumn is the most reliable stretch for wandering outdoors.
