Itinerary
One of the most beautiful mountains of Romania.
Nestled in the Piatra Craiului National Park Mountains in the Southern Carpathians, the villages of Pestera an Magura offer an authentic glimpse into rural Romanian life. Your immersive, full-day tour begins in central Brașov, where you’ll meet your local guide and board a private vehicle for the 45-minute drive to the village. Along the way, let your guide know if you have any specific interests so he or she can customize the day’s itinerary. Learn about the history of the villages, where the traditional industries of sheep farming and cheese making are still practice by many of the village’s. Visit the Bat Cave about 10 minutes. Next, set off into the surrounding hills and meadows og Magura village for a moderate guided hike for 3 to 4 hours. Let your guide know if you prefer to hike for longer or shorter, and go at a pace that’s comfortable to you.
Make a stop to the oldest guest house in the National Park. After working up an appetite, we have a hearty lunch. Savour simple Romanian cuisine home-made from local farm-fresh ingredients including eggs, vegetables and pork. Purchase beer or wine to top off your meal. From the guest house we have a walk in Pestera Village back to the car, about 1 hour. We can visit also the local church.

5Fantastic views with an amazing guide
Amazing hike with Marian from Active Travel. The loop trail around Magura and Pestera was very scenic and varied, with diverse landscapes such as barns, pastures, forests and a cave, with fantastic red and gold autumn foliage at this time of the year (last days of September). It’s a great look into rural life in these areas, with lots of sheep, cows and horses, and the included lunch was great as well. Marian is very nice to talk to and very informative, with lots of interesting insights to share! Depending on how well-equipped you are, you can do different itineraries. I did the easy one and both the itinerary and pacing were great! Would definitely recommended it. Thank you so much!

5Great day in the Carpathian mountain villages
I was booked to join a group cultural tour of Romania from Bucharest but since I love the outdoors and walking I tried to find a day tour I could join as a solo traveller in the Carpathian mountains from Brasov first. This day suited my requirements perfectly. The day started in mist and light rain but within thirty minutes it had cleared up to give beautiful sightings of the many smallholdings and houses set in the surrounding countryside, As we walked Marian explained much of the traditional way of life, and the many invading groups which over the centuries had influenced this. The 12km walk included a visit to the bat cave, in itself interesting, and finished with a superb locally sourced lunch in a local guesthouse. Altogether a thoroughly enjoyable day. Thankyou Active Travel and Marian.
5Amazing landscapes with the best guide!
Bogdan is a super guide! He has a lot of interests and does plenty of activities, so everything is explained from the point of view of someone that knows and lives the places where you're taken! A long walk in the mountains, through the villages, with beautiful views, to finish with a really tasty and large lunch! Super recommended!
5Solo Traveler Village Hiking
I'm so glad I booked this experience! Bogdan was a great guide. I let him know I was interested both in the mountains and the traditional villages, so he planned a perfect hike through some gorges before we did a loop hike to the villages. He set a moderate pace and we hiked 11.5 miles! It was more than I expected but he knew I could do it - I appreciated his confidence in me and felt like I got so much out of the day. Bogdan and I talked a lot about outdoor recreation in Romania, its ecology, landscape, history, and current affairs. He even showed me some agility games and gave me tips on navigating steep terrain and controlled breathing. The lunch was delicious, Bogdan was great company, and I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to explore the mountains and countryside from Brasov!

About Brașov
Brașov is a medieval Transylvanian city ringed by the Carpathians, with a Gothic Black Church, a cobbled main square and day trips to Bran Castle.
Brașov lies in a basin of the Carpathian Mountains in central Romania, with the wooded Tâmpa hill rising above its old town. The city was built up by German settlers, the Transylvanian Saxons, and its centre is a tidy grid of baroque houses around Council Square, with the Old Council House in the middle. The Black Church, the largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul, was blackened by a fire in 1689.
Top-ranked sights in Brașov: Black Church (Biserica Neagra), Council Square (Piata Sfatului), Rope Street (Strada Sforii).
