About Tunis

Tunis is the capital of Tunisia, a Mediterranean city of a walled medina, Roman mosaics, ancient Carthage and the blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Said.

Tunis grew around its medina, a World Heritage maze of vaulted lanes, mosques, palaces and souks that spreads from the Zitouna Mosque. The souks specialise: perfumes, gold, leather and the red felt caps called chechia each have their own alleys. The medina is entered through Bab el Bhar, the French Gate, from the broad Avenue Habib Bourguiba, which has French colonial buildings and cafés and runs to the cathedral of St Vincent de Paul.
