About Antwerp

Antwerp is a Flemish port city on the Scheldt, known for its Gothic cathedral, Rubens, a grand railway station and the diamond trade.

The tall spire of the Gothic cathedral rises above the old centre, and inside hang paintings by Rubens, who lived in the city and whose house and studio are now a museum. The Grote Markt is ringed by gabled guild houses and has a fountain showing the hero Brabo hurling a giant's severed hand into the river, a story linked with the city's name. The railway station, finished in 1905, is nicknamed the railway cathedral.

Top-ranked sights in Antwerp: Grand Market Place (Grote Markt van Antwerpen), Cathedral of Our Lady, Butcher's Hall (Vleeshuis).
