Experience the best of Valparaíso

Valparaíso is Chile's Pacific port, a city of brightly painted houses and old funiculars climbing steep hills above a curved bay.

The historic quarter of Valparaíso, a World Heritage Site, is spread over dozens of hills that fall steeply to the sea. Houses in every colour cling to the slopes, walls are covered in murals, and old funiculars known as ascensores still carry passengers between the port and the hilltops. Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción are the best known of the hills, with cafés, galleries and lookouts over the bay.

La Sebastiana, the house of the poet Pablo Neruda on Cerro Bellavista, is now a museum of his collections and has wide views of the harbour. Plaza Sotomayor, beside the headquarters of the Chilean Navy, marks the old heart of the port. Viña del Mar, with its beaches and flower clock, adjoins the city to the north, the dunes of Concón lie beyond it, and inland the Casablanca Valley produces white wines.

Seafood fills the menus: conger eel soup, sea urchin, shellfish and the local chorrillana, a pile of chips topped with beef, onion and fried eggs that Valparaíso claims as its own. Pisco sours and Chilean wine accompany it. Summers are dry and warm, with sea mist rolling in on many mornings, and the bay is lit by a long fireworks display at New Year.
