Experience the best of Puerto Varas
Puerto Varas is a lakeside town in southern Chile, set on Lake Llanquihue beneath the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes with a German-settler stamp.

Puerto Varas sits on the shore of Lake Llanquihue, one of Chile's largest lakes, with the snow-capped cone of Osorno volcano standing across the water and the jagged Calbuco close by. German families settled the region from the 1850s, and the wooden houses with steep shingled roofs and the gardens full of roses along the lakefront still show their influence.
The Petrohué River tumbles through channels of black lava rock at the Saltos del Petrohué, in Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, Chile's oldest, beside the emerald water of Lake Todos los Santos. Frutillar, a lakeside town of German-style houses with a famous music hall on the water, lies to the north, and Puerto Montt, a port with a lively fish market, is a short drive south.
Kuchen, German-style cakes filled with berries or apple, are served with coffee in the town's tea rooms, and salmon from the nearby fjords is grilled or smoked. Curanto, a stew of shellfish, sausage and meat traditionally cooked in a pit, is the dish of the southern archipelago. Rain falls through much of the year, and the long, bright days of summer are the driest.
