Puerto Natales, on the Last Hope Sound in Chilean Patagonia, is a small waterfront town and the base for Torres del Paine National Park.

Puerto Natales lies on the shore of Última Esperanza Sound, Last Hope in English, a long inlet of grey-green water with snowy peaks across it. The town is a grid of low, brightly roofed buildings with a waterfront promenade where black-necked swans often feed. Sheep farming, the sea and the mountains still shape its character.
Torres del Paine National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve of granite towers, glaciers and turquoise lakes, lies to the north and draws trekkers to the W Trek and the longer Paine Circuit. Closer to town, the Milodón Cave once sheltered giant ground sloths, and boats cross the sound to the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers in Bernardo O'Higgins National Park. El Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier lie across the Argentine border.
Patagonian lamb roasted on an iron cross over open flames, king crab from the southern channels and hake from the cold water are the dishes to look for, along with pisco sours made with calafate berry. Legend says that anyone who eats a calafate berry will return to Patagonia. The long daylight of December and January suits trekking, and the wind blows hard in all seasons.
