San Pedro de Atacama is a village of low whitewashed adobe houses and dusty streets in an oasis of the Atacama Desert, at about 2,400 metres. Its adobe church goes back to the 17th century and has a roof of cactus wood, and the small Museo Arqueológico Gustavo Le Paige displays mummies and pottery from the desert's early peoples. The cone of Licancabur volcano stands over the town to the east.

Around the oasis lie landscapes that seem to belong to another planet. The Valle de la Luna has salt-crusted ridges and dunes, the Salar de Atacama holds flamingos on its lagoons, and Laguna Cejar and other pools are so salty that swimmers float. Farther out are the Miscanti and Meñiques lakes below high volcanoes and, at around 4,300 metres, the El Tatio geyser field, best seen at dawn when steam rises in the cold.

Empanadas, quinoa dishes and llama or goat stews come with fresh bread from clay ovens, and rica-rica, a local desert herb, flavours teas and pisco sours. The clear dry air gives some of the best night skies anywhere. Rain is rare, days are sunny and nights are cold.
