Skanderbeg Square, a vast open plaza, is the heart of the city, flanked by the Et'hem Bey Mosque with its delicate frescoes, the clock tower and the National History Museum with its giant socialist-era mosaic. Nearby, the Pyramid of Tirana is a striking concrete relic of the communist decades.

Two museums set inside former nuclear bunkers tell the story of the country's isolated communist era, and the House of Leaves documents the work of the secret police. Blloku, once a closed quarter for party elites, is the liveliest district for bars, restaurants and boutiques, and the Grand Park and its lake offer green space and long walks. Bright façades painted across the centre give the city its cheerful look.

Bakeries sell flaky byrek from early morning, and restaurants serve tavë kosi of baked lamb with yoghurt, grilled meats and local raki. The weather is warm for much of the year, with pleasant springs and autumns, hot summers and mild winters. A cable car climbs Mount Dajti for views over the plain, and the castle town of Krujë, the white Ottoman houses of Berat and the Adriatic beaches of Durrës are easy trips.
