Experience the best of Pogradec

Pogradec stands on the south-western shore of Lake Ohrid, one of the deepest and oldest lakes in Europe, with the Mokra mountains rising behind the town. A promenade follows the water past cafés, fishing boats and a pebbly beach, and streets of shops and small cafés run back from the shore. The border with North Macedonia lies a few kilometres to the south-east.

At Drilon, a short drive south, springs feed the lake through pools shaded by willows, with open-air restaurants beside the water. On the Lin peninsula to the north, a village looks across to the far shore, and near it the floor of a sixth-century church is covered in a mosaic of birds and plants. Walks and drives climb into the woods and meadows of the Mokra range.

The koran, a trout found only in Lake Ohrid, is the fish the town is known for, and other lake fish, grilled or baked, come to the table at waterside restaurants. Raki and strong coffee follow most meals, often on terraces facing the lake, where summer evenings stay mild.
