Saranda climbs a steep hillside above its bay, with a palm-lined promenade at the water's edge and apartment blocks stacked up the slope. Its name is a local form of the Greek for Forty Saints, after a monastery whose ruins lie among the houses. The mosaic floor of an ancient synagogue was found near the harbour, and Lëkurësi Castle, a sixteenth-century fortress on the ridge, looks over the town towards Corfu.
A short drive south, Butrint occupies a wooded peninsula between a lagoon and the sea, with a Greek theatre, Roman baths, a baptistery floored with mosaic and a Venetian tower. The beaches and small islets of Ksamil lie on the way. Inland, the Blue Eye is a spring that rises from great depth into a pool of clear blue water, and the stone houses of Gjirokastër, a UNESCO town, sit in the hills beyond.
Evenings belong to the seafront, where grilled fish, mussels from the Butrint lagoon and plates of olives and white cheese arrive with a glass of raki. Tavë kosi, lamb baked under a crust of yoghurt and egg, is a national favourite. Citrus and olive groves fill the gaps between the villages, and the long hot season from May to October suits the beaches best.
