Experience the best of Tbilisi

Tbilisi, Georgia's capital, spills along a river gorge beneath a fortress, mixing balconied old houses, sulphur baths and bold modern landmarks.

The old town gathers along the Mtkvari River, its narrow streets lined with carved wooden balconies, churches and wine bars. Abanotubani, the bath district, is crowned by brick domes over sulphur springs, and the walls of Narikala Fortress overlook it all, reached by cable car or a steep walk. The Mother of Georgia statue stands on the ridge holding a sword and a bowl of wine.

Rustaveli Avenue, the grand boulevard, leads past the Opera House, the Parliament and the National Museum. The glass Peace Bridge and the vast Holy Trinity Cathedral show very different faces of the city, and the Dry Bridge market sells Soviet relics, paintings and antiques. Converted factories and courtyards host cafés, studios, galleries and late-night clubs.

Cheese-filled khachapuri, khinkali dumplings and walnut sauces are best with wines fermented in clay qvevri. Spring blossom and the autumn grape harvest make the loveliest seasons, summer is hot, and winter is cold but often bright. The ancient capital of Mtskheta, the wine region of Kakheti and the Gergeti church below Mount Kazbek make memorable trips.
